A computer repair technician is someone who repairs and/or maintains computers and other servers. The technician's duties may range from basic computer maintenance to building or rebuilding new hardware, setting up and maintaining computer networks, and developing and maintaining business-related software applications. Some computer repair technicians are also specialized in repairing lost data files. To become a computer repair technician, you must first complete an accredited computer-repair training program.

In most states, you need to be at least 18 years of age to become a computer repair service technician. Most states require that the individual passing the exam not have a criminal record that goes back more than three years. You must also pass the examination administrated by the American Computer Repair Association or ACRA. Individuals who successfully complete the exam to earn a credential recognized by the American Board of Computer Repair and receive the certificate EPCR.

The ACRA examination test is taken in two parts. In the first part, students are trained to evaluate both technical and logical aspects of computer support. Students are trained to determine whether a problem means a problem in the hardware or if it indicates a problem in the application (for instance, a slow running PC). Students are also trained to assess whether a problem is critical or not critical for the type of service the client requires. A computer repair service is required to obtain CPE credits before they can complete the repair work. These credits are earned through completion of a specified number of repair tasks under supervised guidance of experienced technicians. First, computer support technicians are evaluated on the number of diagnostic test they can perform in twenty-four hours or less. The expected answer for this question is "yes." In order to earn credit, technicians must be able to perform at least one diagnostic test in twenty-four hours or less.

To qualify for credit, technicians must perform diagnostic tests in a minimum of twenty-four hours or the amount of time the client and local computer repair services charge for one hour of diagnostic testing. Second, the expected answer to the second question is "no" if the client requests more than twenty-four hours of diagnostic testing from the certified computer repair services provider. The final section of the exam consists of questions that are based on local standards. Computer repair technicians are expected to be able to identify local standards in hardware and software problems. Technicians must pass this section without receiving an unsatisfactory rating.

The third section of the exam measures performance based on the total number of diagnostic tests completed in a month. If a technician completes one hundred diagnostic tests in a month, that technician has been rated an "A" grade. The "A" grade is the lowest possible score that a technician can earn based on the ninety-five questions required in the exam.
